COLUMBINE VALLEY

The owners of this sleek modern home sought to create a large-format patio with spaces for cooking, entertaining and lounging throughout the four seasons. Central to this vision was a custom spool (spa-pool hybrid) that would allow for both cool summer dips and winter soaking sessions. Yet strict HOA regulations and detailed city requirements meant that the client’s dream backyard had to be executed within a narrow set of allowable parameters.

Our design plans centered on leveraging strategic sightlines, complementary materials and wide openings to the outdoors, allowing the entire space to present as a cohesive architectural vision. Beyond the summer months, large overhangs protect an outdoor kitchen and bar, while a fireplace lounge adjoins the spool to create a cozy winter retreat. Finally, a restrained palette of plantings soften the clean lines of this protected, fenced environment. Despite a relatively intimate footprint, the resulting design feels both airy and integrated, offering multiple zones of activity for year-round enjoyment.
